About Us

Established in 2002, the Sustainable Development Task Force of Snohomish County is dedicated to facilitating the adoption of sustainable development strategies and the construction of green building projects throughout the County. The Task Force is a public/private partnership comprised of members from the architectural, building, and development communities, county government, local governments, and the PUD.

Our Mission

The mission of the Sustainable Development Task Force is to educate the community and its governing bodies about the benefits of sustainable building and assist in the development and adoption of a plan to promote and utilize sustainable planning, design, and construction in Snohomish County.

Organization & Leadership
The Task Force is to consist of a Steering Committee, Technical Advisory Group, and Working Groups.

Executive Committee
The Executive Committee is responsible for carrying out specific administrative tasks that require more time or have more urgency than can be covered in the monthly steering committee meetings. The primary responsibility of this group is to keep track of grant applications, reporting, and spending. Other issues that the executive committee  works on are planning large events, developing administrative procedures, and tracking schedules and goals.

Steering Committee
The Steering Committee is responsible for leading and managing the activities of the Task Force. The Steering Committee is the executive entity and is ultimately accountable for the Task Force doing what is says it is going to do.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Recruiting and retaining members of the Technical Advisory Group
  • Determining the priorities and project activities to
be undertaken by the Task Force
  • Overseeing those project activities
  • Managing the message of the Task Force, and
    ensuring consistency of that message
  • Overseeing the activities of the Working Groups

The Steering Committee is to consist of from 9-15 individuals representing a diversity of stakeholders interested in sustainable development. These include: citizens, developers, builders, County Executive Office, County Council, environmental interests, utility representatives, planners, economic development entities, local governments, and development specialists. At a minimum a representative from each Working Group and the TAG must also serve on the Steering Committee.

The full Task Force is charged with selecting charter members of the Steering Committee. At this point there are no terms or term limits for membership on the Steering Committee. Members will be responsible for selecting additions and/or replacements to the Steering Committee.

Technical Advisory Group
The Technical Advisory Group (TAG) is to consist of individuals with expertise in different aspects of sustainable development. For example:

  • green building architects
  • low impact development specialists
  • stormwater experts

could be members of this group. TAG members are to be engaged as needed and based on their interest in specific projects and activities associated with the Action Plan and with sustainable development in Snohomish County.

There is no limit to the number of persons who can serve on the TAG. The TAG is not expected to have any formal meetings, but members are likely to attend meetings of the Steering Committee and the full Task Force as time and interest allows.
